Symptom 1: no ice at all
Check the easy things in this order. The ice maker has its own on/off switch or an Ice On/Off button on the panel, and it may have been bumped. Confirm the water valve is fully open and the line behind the fridge is not kinked. LG also says a newly installed refrigerator can take from 12 hours to two days to make its first batch.
Then run the ice maker test. Remove the bin, press and hold the test button for about three seconds, and watch whether the tray turns and fills. If you cannot find the button, unplug the refrigerator for at least three minutes and restart it. If the tray never fills, or sits completely upside down, that is a service call.
Symptom 2: ice, but small or slow
This is usually water or temperature, not a broken part.
- Old filter. LG says a filter used six months or more can restrict flow. Replace it, then dispense water to clear trapped air.
- Warm freezer. Water freezes slowly if the freezer is set too warm or the doors are opened often. LG suggests lowering it a degree or two and waiting 24 hours.
- Reverse osmosis. A drinking-water system under the sink can drop the pressure below what the ice maker needs.
Symptom 3: ice, but it will not come out
Check the control lock first. On many panels, a lock disables the dispenser until you hold the Lock button for three seconds. Next, pull the bin and shake it. Ice that sits unused melts slightly and fuses into clumps. Wipe out the chute with a damp cloth, since fragments from crushed ice can pack it. On Craft Ice models, the bin must sit in its proper position, with the handle facing forward.
Symptom 4: ice is wet, fused or frozen over
That points to warm air reaching the ice compartment, a door that is not closing fully, or a fill problem. Check the gasket for tears and make sure nothing holds a door open. If the ice maker keeps freezing over, request service.
Do not chip at the ice maker or force the tray. Unplug the refrigerator before reaching in beyond the bin.
Stop and call if
- Water drips onto the floor or from behind the fridge.
- The tray stays tilted or upside down after a reset.
- The test cycle never fills the tray, and the water valve is open.
Repair or replace?
An ice maker module or fill valve is usually a modest repair on a fridge that otherwise cools well. If the fridge is also warm, noisy or old, ask the technician whether the whole unit is near the end. The repair-or-replace guide sets out the arithmetic.
An Austin note
Austin Water's 2025 report lists average total hardness of about 93 ppm (5.4 grains per gallon), which is moderately hard. Mineral scale builds slowly at a fill valve over years, so changing the filter on schedule matters more than any gadget. Homes on well water or a softener can differ. Austin ApplianceFix is not an authorized dealer or servicer for this brand. Whether a technician holds manufacturer authorization is something to ask them directly.

Questions people ask
Why does my LG ice maker make ice, then stop?
A full bin, a lock setting, a clogged filter or a warm freezer are the usual reasons. Work through the symptom paths above before booking a visit.
How do I reset an LG ice maker?
LG describes holding the test button for about three seconds, or unplugging the refrigerator for at least three minutes. Allow up to 24 hours for ice to resume.
Should I buy a new ice maker part myself?
Only if the manual says an owner can fit it. A technician can confirm the failed part first, so you do not pay for one that was fine.
